that this lurker says hello and thank you. Got hooked while in college listening to tapes from 82-85, then made it to some shows in the 90s. Thanks to you all I have been able to find my way through an incredible amount of music to listen to some amazing shows from all eras.

Could anyone recommend shows with Comes a time? I love 5/9/77 but am not familar with other great versions. Thanks.

'77 is definitely the peak for this tune imho, but i really like the dark star> comes a time from portland '72 as well. great minimal intro out of star.

I’ve never heard a version of this song I don’t like, and 5/9/77 is pretty much the top of the CAT mountain as far as I’m concerned so I’ll steer clear of the “best versions” discussion, but two versions of interest:

11/1/85

Jerry's voice is pretty well shot (as was the case almost without exception during this period) but this version is the centerpiece of an unusually arranged (for the era) second set. There is a fantastic Oade audience of this show, or you can go the Dick’s Picks route (#21 I think).

6/28/85

The meat of a 1-time only Jerry threefer: A Bird Song>Comes A Time>Deal sandwich that ends the first set.

Actually had 11/1/85 on the ipod and needed to go take a walk to another building. Thanks for reminding me about that one. I think I dl'd right after the auds were put back up but never got around to it.

JOTS, thanks too! Really like 1971 so I will definitely give it try.

11-7-71 Harding Theater S.F. is an interesting early one. It has the original line ( which I find very powerful but does limit the scope of the song which is why they probably dropped it ). Also,it's just smack dab in the first set, not the second set epic it became later.

elbow1126: ..this link will take you to one page of the original lyrics that were eventually dropped:

Here's a link to a unique performance; I have no idea how Weir pulled off the transition but it worked:
(1987-04-04 - Worcester CentrumO

I know you didn't request it, but if you like "Comes A Time" you may like this pre-drums version of "China Doll" - Jerry stays on stage for a solo after Lesh, Weir and Brent leave; he also returns before they do and the audience accompanies him as he continues with a solo; other unique happenings at this show as well:
(1985-03-31 - Portland, ME)

Thanks a lot for choosing such a cool way to step over the threshold from "lurker" --- AshesRising

Ashes,

Great links and will definitely check out that China Doll. This is what I have loved about this forum. Always loved the music, I just hadn't developed my palate. I have been able to learn so much from posts like yours. I lurked because I felt I could only take and not give back. I hope this is no longer the case.

Why does this pre-FM sound so scratchy?

Such a great pick, such a great song. Don't know the best but 5/9/77 Buffalo is right up there.
Love to hear about better versions!

Good leads that I haven't explored thanks.

Those make my suggestion pale, but the 1985-06-14 show was a nice mellow one with it's own charms (SB on Archive not Speeding Arrow).

yes. I believe the set starts Space>comes a time>sailor>saint. If that's the gig you are thinking of i concur on that. haven't thrown that in years but a very nice version.
